The project aims to analyze regional settlement patterns from the 5th millennium BC to the Islamic Periods, with a particular focus on developments of political and economic infrastructures as conduits of local connectivity and inter-regional mobility.

The fieldwork relies on the combination of archaeological surveys with the analysis of the available written sources and excavations. Together, these methods will help to establish the difficult and still largely unexplored cultural history of a region traditionally viewed as a fringe of Near Eastern empires.
